Head Lice 101

A head louse is a small, wingless insect that clings to the scalp and neck and feeds on human blood. Contrary to popular belief, head lice can’t fly or jump from one person to another. Lice usually spread through head-to-head contact with an infected person or through sharing combs, hats, and other items that are used on hair.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 6 to 12 million children aged 3 to 11 are infected with head lice each year. Lice infestations occur year-round, but activity is highest during summer and back-to-school season.

Head lice checks, treatment and prevention

Head lice are easily transmitted and, if left unchecked, can cause unpleasant symptoms such as:

  • Itching
  • Sores caused by frequent scratching
  • Tender and swollen lymph nodes

In addition, having head lice can make your child feel embarrassed. His or her school might even make your child miss class to avoid spreading lice to the other children.
